Car Sharing and Covid-19: significant impact only between March and April 2020.

Car sharing vehicle mobility was stable overall during the health emergency that hit Italy during 2020.

The only period of sharp decline occurred in March and April, when a particularly strict lockdown was in effect in the country. In detail, car sharing mobility in March 2020 was down by approx. 50% compared to the previous month, when no significant enforcement measures were yet in place to combat Covid-19. A further sharp decrease in mobility followed in April, which recorded a 40% drop compared to March and even almost a 70% drop compared to February.

These are the findings of the special Observatory of Targa Telematics, a tech company specialized in the development of digital solutions in the field of telematics, smart mobility, and IoT platforms for mobility operators, which monitors over half a million assets.

Significant differences are evident between the first lockdown at the beginning of 2020 (March-April) and the softer restrictive measures of October-November on the eve of the “second wave” of the pandemic, when car sharing vehicle mobility was approx. 130% higher. In this context, the month of September 2020 was particularly notable for an almost full percentage of cars haring vehicle use, thanks to the reopening of schools and a greater presence in offices after the summer, with mobility even increasing by 8% compared to January 2020, when the situation was normal.

“There is no denying the impacts on car sharing due to the necessary restrictive measures to address the ongoing health emergency”, said Carlo Stefanelli, Targa Telematics CTO. “Nevertheless, overall, the mobility data in our possession shows an encouraging scenario, despite the massive use of remote working and remote learning, which reduce the opportunities for urban travel.  Moreover, we have evidence of the affirmation of new mobility habits, with the advent of new and changing needs, to be satisfied with innovative, flexible and sustainable solutions”.
